Business Pathways
Click on each business pathway to view the recommended quarter-by-quarter classes and other recommendations.
These pathways assume:
- You will be a full-time student.
- You will start in the fall.
- You are ready to take 100- and 200-level classes.
If not, you can still complete the pathway! You will just need to make adjustments. Talk with your advisor to customize your plan.
This recommended pathway meets the requirements of the Associate in Business (DTA/MRP) transfer degree. It prepares you for a university major in a variety of business fields and combined fields such as accounting, business administration, business and sustainability, finance, international business, marketing and operations management.

Quarter 1 (15 credits)
Optional:
MATH 97 Elementary algebra I (5 credits)
or MATH 98 Elementary algebra II (5 credits)
or MATH 99 Elementary algebra III (5 credits)
This pathway has many courses with math requirements, so if your math placement is below the 100 level, take math with two of the other Quarter 1 courses. Talk with your advisor about adjusting the pathway to match.
BUS& 101 Intro to business (5 credits)
BTEC 101 Introduction to business computing (5 credits)
ENGL& 101 English composition I (5 credits)
Career exploration:
- Find your people! Attend area-of-study activities and connect with clubs relating to your career goals. Find out where students in your pathway go to study.
Action items:
- Meet with your advisor to build your degree plan in Starfish.
- Have your transfer-in credits officially evaluated.
- Visit the Intercultural Center, the Learning Center and the library.
Quarter 2 (15 credits)
ENGL& 201 Advanced composition (5 credits)
or ENGL& 235 Technical writing (5 credits)
MATH& 141 Precalculus (5 credits)
or MATH& 145 Algebra applications for economics and business (5 credits)
If you're not ready for MATH& 141/MATH 145, continue the math sequence leading to it.
Humanities (5 credits): a course with "H" at the end of the course description
Career exploration:
- Compare the different business majors at universities you're interested in.
- Start keeping a portfolio of your best work.
- Meet with the internship coordinator to explore internships for summer.
Quarter 3 (15 credits)
ECON& 201 Microeconomics (5 credits)
MATH& 148 Business calculus (5 credits)
If you're not ready for MATH& 148, continue the math sequence leading to it.
Humanities (5 credits): a course with "H" at the end of the course description
Career exploration:
- Attend an info session about WCC's Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) in Applied Business Management.
- Apply for internships or summer jobs.
- Apply or plan for student leadership positions for next year in student government, club leadership, etc.
- Ask your instructors about nearby conferences you might attend next year.
Action items:
- Check the GPA and other entry requirements for your future major. Are you on track?
Summer
If you've been taking math in place of some of the recommended courses, this might be a good time to catch up.
Quarter 4 (15 credits)
ACCT& 201 Principles of accounting I (5 credits)
MATH& 146 Intro to statistics (5 credits)
Humanities (5 credits): a course with "H" at the end of the course description. If your other two humanities courses were in the same department, choose a different subject for this one.
Career exploration:
- Listen to podcasts about business or the kind of business career you're aiming for.
Action items:
- Meet with your advisor about applying to universities or to the BAS in applied business management. Start your transfer applications.
- Apply for next year's financial aid.
Quarter 5 (15 credits)
ACCT& 202 Principles of accounting II (5 credits)
ECON& 202 Macroeconomics (5 credits)
Science (5 credits): a physical or biological science with "MS" or "MS l" at the end of the course description.
Career exploration:
- Work on your resume through the Career, Job & Transfer Center.
Action items:
- Apply to graduate.
Quarter 6 (15 credits)
ACCT& 203 Principles of accounting III (5 credits)
BUS& 201 Business law (5 credits)
Lab science (5 credits): a physical or biological science with "MS l" at the end of the course description.
Action items:
- Attend the spring job fair.
The business administration AAS degree provides a core of fundamental business courses combined with ample flexibility in elective choices to allow students to concentrate study in their business area of choice. It prepares students in entrepreneurship to start their own business, and/or to gain the technical and professional skills needed for office management, marketing, retail and other other business professions, including various supervisory/entry level management positions in these fields.

The electives in this pathway give you a chance to take courses related to what you plan to do in your business career. Do you want to run an art gallery? Why not take some art electives? Do you hope to work in a business that conducts trade with Canada? Here's your opportunity to take French.
Prepare for the Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Business Management
To prepare for the BAS degree in applied business management, take as many of the following courses as possible. Some of them are listed as options in the quarter-by-quarter pathway. Others would be electives.

The retail industry is constantly changing; leaders who can think creatively, evaluate competing options, and bring balance to their stores are essential. WCC's retail management certificate prepares industry professionals with the skills needed to advance in their careers. The coursework provides relevant education for all retail sectors as well as non-retail management career paths.
