English writing placement

At WCC, you decide which English class you'll start in, based on your reading and writing abilities, time management and study skills, and life factors. WCC’s online informed self-placement program for English takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete. You can log into the program as many times as you wish and take as long as you wish to complete it.

Math placement

To figure out which math course you should take, visit the math placement webpage. Your placement will be based on your previous college math, on an exam such as AP or CLEP, or on the results you get using WCC's online math placement tool. It isn't a test!

English & math placement for students with Advanced Placement (AP) Test Scores

Please e-mail your documentation, including your name and the last four digits of your ctcLink ID number, to OrcaCentral@whatcom.edu. You can also drop off your documentation in person at the Orca Central front desk in the Heiner Building.

English and math placement for adult basic education (ABE) and English language learner (ELL) classes

ABE and ELL students use the CASAS test for placement. It's a state-required test that helps the Transitional Learning teachers and staff know which class would be best. After you apply to ABE or ELL, the Transitional Learning staff will contact you to schedule your CASAS test.

English and math placement for adult high school completion (HSC+)

After you apply to the HSC+ program, the college will send you an email with an invitation to a Canvas "course" where you'll complete your getting-started processes, including a writing sample and a math assessment, all online.
