If you complete the accounting certificate, you can choose to enter the workforce immediately, or continue working on the AAS degree in accounting, or both.

Certificates of proficiency are primarily intended for workers with prior education or experience who want to hone their skills in a specialty area and/or to advance to higher level positions. The coursework may also be applied toward the accounting certificate or AAS degree.

If your plan is to study accounting at a university and/or become a certified public accountant (CPA), you should complete the associate in business (DTA/MRP) degree.

Whatcom students provide pro bono professional services

Learning doesn't end at the classroom for students in Whatcom's accounting program. These students polish their skills and knowledge in service to the community.

Qualified students participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, providing free assistance with tax return preparation. Training on basic tax law and the preparation of individual tax returns is provided and students are required to pass the VITA certification exam. A certified public accountant or enrolled agent reviews all returns and is on hand to address complex issues. The VITA program is sponsored by the IRS and, in Whatcom County, by WWU's Beta Alpha Psi and Accounting Society.
