BAS in applied business management at Whatcom

Whatcom Community College offers a bachelor of applied science (BAS) degree in applied business management, with cohorts beginning fall quarter and with all courses offered online. This degree is specifically designed to train you to be able to work in the variety of small to medium-sized growing businesses that make up the majority of Whatcom County’s employers. This is also the degree for you if you're a budding entrepreneur who wishes to stay and grow your businesses in Whatcom County.

Core coursework includes professional communication; human resources and marketing for managers; financial management; private enterprise, profits and social justice; business strategy and sustainability; and organizational leadership.

Program eligibility

To be eligible, students need to have an associate degree (business-related preferred) from any regionally accredited community or technical college, minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA, and 2.3 GPA in business-related coursework.

Interested students can prepare now by taking any of or all the following lower division general education requirements of the BAS degree:

Costs

FAQs

Do I have to complete a degree to start the BAS program or is it sufficient to have classes that apply toward it?

You will need to have successfully completed at least an associate degree prior to starting the BAS program.
Can I apply to the BAS program even if I haven’t finished my associate degree?

Absolutely, as long as you anticipate successfully finishing your associate degree prior to the BAS degree start date; i.e., finish no later than summer quarter for a fall start.
Do I need to submit letters of recommendation to apply to the BAS program?

No, all we need are names and contact information for two professional (e.g., supervisor – work, volunteer, military) and/or academic (e.g., professor, teacher, academic advisor, research or group project partner) references. You may choose to also submit letters of recommendation with your application, but they are not required.
How current do my references need to be?

Ideally, they should be within one year, though they can go further back, particularly in cases where the professional or academic relationship was extensive.
Which is the best path to the BAS program – the associate of applied science (AAS) degree or the business DTA degree?

With proper planning, an associate of applied science (AAS) business administration degree is an excellent path to the BAS program. If you are pursuing this option, meet with an academic advisor for assistance with streamlining your path. If you are just starting out with the intent of pursuing the BAS degree, you may prefer to go through the business DTA degree, as it is the most direct path and keeps your options open either to enter Whatcom's BAS program or to transfer into a university business major.
How many students will be accepted into the BAS program and when can they start?

At this time, we will be accepting a maximum of 30 students to start each fall quarter.
Do I have to do the BAS program full-time?

No, but you should plan on at least 10 credits per quarter. Core classes are offered only once each year. Students attending part-time must take the sequence of upper-division courses as laid out for the program, a minimum of 10 credits each term of the regular academic year. If you opt to do the program part-time, you should prioritize the upper division core courses first. However, please note that you will need to complete MATH& 146 prior to fall and ACCT& 202 prior to spring of the second year of the program.
Will all classes in the BAS program be offered online, including the general education requirements?

Yes. However, note that the lower division general education requirements are open to all Whatcom students and you are not guaranteed a spot. We recommend that you enroll as early as you are able.
